News; Cheapest Nike Mercurial Superfly Leather FG Gold/Volt/Black

Published: Wednesday 06 January, 2016

Nike unveiled the second edition of their luxury Tech Craft collection. The addition of a leather layer applied upon the upper offers a natural feel in an otherwise modern silo which poses as an ideal combination however the cleats receive little professional endorsement. Being a central defender I wouldn't usually opt for a speed-themed cleat like the Nike Mercurial Superfly however the leather variation matches my usual choice of Nike's Tiempo Legend VI which offers quality touch and feel on the ball while remaining comfortable.

Having previously worn the Tech Craft Hypervenom Phinish I was looking forward to experiencing the Superfly to compare the differences between each cleat. When testing the Tech Craft Phinish although I found the feedback when receiving the ball from passes both long and short very premium, the fit was slightly loose and not as responsive as what I look for, so I was hoping the Superfly's Brio cables and Dynamic Fit collar would counteract that sensation.

I'm actually a big fan of the Superfly design, however the Canvas/Volt Tech Craft edition are a pair of cleats I definitely wouldn't place within the most visually stunning list. The Canvas leather upper looked too retro and unique for my taste and the contrast of hi-vis Volt was far too intense. A traditional Black/White Tech Craft would provide a classier color-way in my opinion.

Sliding on the cleats straight out of the box, I was instantly impressed with the comfort levels. Although the Superfly Tech Craft remains a speed cleat, the comfort has been taken to all new levels due to the super soft K-Leather upper which replaces its standard synthetic construction. The heel-cup of the cleats remain a standard Flyknit material with its Dynamic Fit collar above which may cause discomfort for some players at he back of the foot.

As said, I was hoping the fit of the Tech Craft Superfly would prove more snug and responsive compared to its Hypervenom Phinish counterpart however due to the very soft K-Leather quickly stretching and losing its shape the fit was again affected. The in-step of the cleats collapsed which meant I didn't feel as if my feet were tightly wrapped. With that being said, wide-footed players who had troubles with the standard Superfly would benefit from the more forgiving fit. The Dynamic Fit collar, matching the standard Superfly, did provide a sock-like sensation around the ankle however couldn't help to promote a snug fit across the mid-foot and forefoot.

The sizing was initially very true to size, going for my usual US11.5, however after several hours of play the K-Leather stretched and lost its original shape therefore I'd suggest opting for half a size down if you prefer a tight fit like myself.  As you can imagine the break-in time was incredibly minimal. Straight-up the cleats leather upper was very flexible and soft and were comfortable from the first strike and sprint. The carbon fibre sole plate will remain fairly stiff throughout usage to provide increased traction responsiveness however will become slightly more user friendly after 3-4 sessions.

When playing in the cleats, alongside the noticeable comfort levels I was also a big fan of how they performed in terms of giving me lovely feedback when touching, dribbling, and striking the ball. The Nike Mercurial Superfly  K-Leather upper offers a cushioning effect while remaining ultra-thin to provide a bare-foot sensation, again another serious positive. Already a fan of carbon fibre sole plates, the Superfly arguably possesses the finest example on the market however I still wasn't converted by the Dynamic Fit collar.

Incredibly, the Tech Craft Superfly weigh in at just 7.4 oz which showcases as one of the lightest leather cleats on the market alonsgside remaining very high quality. The leather edition weigh in slightly heavier than its standard Superfly counterpart (6.8 oz).  The Superfly is notoriously fairly poor in terms of offering protection due to its ultra-thin and lightweight construction however the addition of the Tech Craft leather composition will provide players with an increased dampened effect when receiving tackles and impacts. A significant weak point however is the Dynamic Fit collar of which runs into the lacing system allowing for studs to penetrate through the leather cleat.

Pro's - Leather, Touch & Feel, Comfort, Carbon Fibre Sole Plate, Lightweight Con's - Fit, Dynamic Fit Collar, Price, Color-Way Overall I'd rate the Nike Mercurial Superfly Tech Craft 90/100. I preferred the touch and feel of the leather upper compared to the standard Superfly however the fit and responsiveness was lessened which I felt was a shame. The Dynamic Fit collar still doesn't provide me with a sense of enhanced performance but the carbon fibre sole plate is arguably my favourite feature upon the Superfly silo. Players wanting a lightweight and technology-rich cleat constructed from a mix of traditional and modern-day materials should take a serious look at the Tech Craft Superfly and entire leather range.
