News; Nike’s Lightning Storm Pack Hypervenom Phantom II FG Total Orang

Published: Monday 19 October, 2015

The Phantom II is designed for the attack-minded player, the player that beats defenders with pace and agile and the player who wins the golden boot every season. Launched as part of Nike’s new Lightning Storm Pack, the new Green Strike Hypervenom Phantom II will be exclusively worn by Neymar for the start of the 2015-16 season. The second generation of Hypervenom Phantom II was originally launched in May in the Silver Storm Pack and it features an array of new technologies never seen before on a Hypervenom including the Dynamic Fit Collar, so how does it compare to other sock models on the market?

Launched as part of Nike’s Lightning Storm Pack, the new colourway is officially dubbed Green Strike/Black and sits alongside the Total Orange/Black edition. Green colours the entire boot in emphatic fashion with touches of black colouring the zig-zag pattern on the heel and sole which is inspired by agility and quick turns. All in all it’s a great template design and colourway.

Now featuring a more flexible sole and Dynamic Fit Collar you will need to take two to three extra sessions to break these boots in. The collar is stiff at first but should loosen up the longer you wear them. Now featuring the Dynamic Fit Collar, the Phantom II is designed to fit wide footed players which is a huge bonus for me as the Superfly and Obra silos were too narrow for me. Sizing wise I’ve gone true to size in my 10.5 UK and it’s a touch too long so you could potentially go half a size smaller than your true size. Comfort wise the upper is thin while the technologies used locks down my foot in place for a supremely responsive feel and fit.

The Dynamic Fit Collar and FlyWire cables are the new features to the Phantom II. These two features along with the NikeSkin upper make this boot the most responsive of Nike’s current collection. When your foot goes in to this boot you can feel an immediate locked down and secure experience. The obvious alternative to this boot is the low-cut Hypervenom Phinish which lacks the collar.Unlike the Superfly and Obra, the Phantom II boasts two primary synthetic upper materials. NikeSkin is the primary upper material located on the entire boot with additional FlyKnit on the lacing region and collar. In terms of softness it’s soft and flexible but not as flexible as what you would see out of the Superfly. Overall I’m happy with the quality of the upper, it’s soft, lightweight and durable enough to last a few seasons.

Using the same nylon chassis split-toe template the material of the soleplate is made to be more flexible for better ease of movement. The SG version replaces the conical studs with deeper metal studs for better penetration on soft ground surfaces. All in all the soleplate is one of the highest quality materials on the market. Applied to the upper are flex grooves to make the upper slightly more flexible and it will provide a touch of friction between the boot and ball. Again Nike’s ACC coating is applied to the upper for a more consistent touch in wet and dry conditions. The off-centre lacing provides a very large and clean striking surface.

Compared to the previous Phantom generation, this boot is designed to be much more durable. The new NikeSkin upper material is stiffer and won’t split where the sole meets the upper, a huge benefit to this generation. Protection wise this boot is about mid range and of all the sock models by Nike this is the most protective. A stiffer NikeSkin upper is used which will help a little with protection from studs and tackles. The FlyKnit region on top of the laces will provide no protection whatsoever.
